MUNDESLEY GOLF CLUB GOES ON LINE

It's taken 105 years, but Mundesley Golf Club has at last got its own website.  The club, founded in 1901, reckons it is 'Norfolk's friendliest' and now the website allows other golfers across the world to share in its history and perhaps plan a visit.

Designed by club manager Tom Duke, the new website includes a brief history of the club, explaining the involvement of golfing legend Harry Vardon (1870 - 1937) who played a significant part in the course design as well as appearing there in many exhibition matches during his lifetime.  Also featured on the site is a 'members only' section where handicaps, competition results and other details can be viewed.

During its 105-year history, Mundesley Golf Club has experienced many triumphs and tribulations, some of which are outlined on the website.  In 2006 it is at its most popular since an enterprising band of golf enthusiasts got together in the nearby Manor Hotel to plan its birth.  And now, a 21st century complement to this true Norfolk golfing gem is available at  www.mundesleygolfclub.co.uk

SHERINGHAM BRANCH RAFA WINS NATIONAL AWARD

The Branch has been awarded the President's cup, the Royal Air Forces Association's highest honour for outstanding service in 2005.  Sir Colin Turner, the Branches President, received the Cup from Air Marshal Philip Sturley, CB MBE BSc FRAes, the Association's President at it's Conference at Blackpool on Sunday, 21st May.   Earlier in the Year the Branch was awarded Certificates for recruiting more new Members in 2004 and 2005 than any other Branch.

At their Luncheon at the Cliftonville Hotel in Cromer on Tuesday, 23rd May the large cup was displayed before some 80 Branch Members.  Mark Jennings, the RAF Coltishall historian, gave a fascinating talk on the history of the air station since it's formation in 1939, the various types of aircraft that had been based there and the famous pilots, who had served there.

At the Luncheon a fluffy bunnie, which once belonged to the famous Second World War fighter ace, Douglas Bader, was giver to Mark Jennings, who will present it to the museum at RAF Neatishead.  Along with other artefacts from RAF Coltishall.  The green long eared toy was an heirloom in Derek Shrigley, the Branch Chairman's family, who knew Douglas Bader when he was at RAF Coltishall after the war.

The Sheringham Branch will be delighted to welcome former members of the RAF, male of female or present members of the RAF, or their families, who may wish to join Branch.   Contact Sir Colin Turner on 01263 837 229 for further details.

READERS LETTER

Dear Editor

Having just returned to Sheringham after a period of time working out of the country I am amazed to see that the Tesco argument is still ongoing.  I have tried to get up to date on all that is happening in the town and I firmly believe that Tesco is not the problem Sheringham should be concerned about.

I have read, and I am not sure of facts, that the North Norfolk Steam Railway have plans to join up with the mainline track, via a level crossing at the top of Station Road.   Now, I can actually remember the original level crossing as a child and loved standing and watching the trainS go by.  However, I also remember my father not being so enamoured with this as it held him up along with many others and there was far less traffic in those days.

They also say that traffic may be directed to use the road over the bridge to access town. Maybe it's me, but the standard of driving I have witnessed over the last 3 months tells me that if this happens, the putting green should expect some unwelcome visitors!

Sheringham will also cease to be a start/end line station and we all know that this means people will get on in Cromer and go the whole journey, not getting off in Sheringham. This would be a huge loss, as I believe that it brings in several thousand visitors to Sheringham each year.

There doesn't appear to be any significant opposition to this proposal, is it going to sneak in through the back door while all attention is on the Tesco fiasco?
JC - Very concerned reader
