SHERINGHAM & CROMER ROUND TABLE

Six Sheringham & Cromer Round Tablers with their partners set off in the early hours of Thursday morning to Augsburg in Germany.  Was it an advanced party for the World Cup?  No it was the annual Euro-Meeting when Sheringham & Cromer meet up with their twin Tablers from Germany, France, Holland and Sweden.

After having been met at the airport and provided with a relaxing lunch it was off to the welcome party which took the form of a barbecue.  As per usual the atmosphere at this event was fantastic, catching up with Tablers from all over Europe that you have not seen for a year and more importantly becoming friends with Tablers and their partners who were attending their first event. The talking was none stop only pausing briefly to take a mouthful of very tasty food and the occasional sip of beer.

After a good nights rest at their hosts the party met again at an historic building in the centre of Augsburg.  It should really have been no surprise, after all the Bavarians are very proud of their beer, that the building was the home to a 700 year old brewery.   A guided tour followed which included a visit to a very cold cellar where the beer was maturing to the stirring music of Mozart.  Of course the beer had to be tasted even if it was only 10am in the morning; it would have been rude to the hosts to refuse.   After completion of the tour brunch was provided, on the menu was potato salad, beer bread, beer sausages and of course beer.
It was then onto a coach to take us off to Munich to visit the Olympic Park.  The highlight of the tour was to climb up the roof (with the benefit of safety harness) of the Olympic Stadium.  The roof was designed to move to cope with wind, snow and changing temperatures, this point was made very clearly by the guides by jumping up and down; a gesture that was not appreciated by some in the party who did not like heights.

Back on the coach for the trip back to Augsburg or so we thought!  The group took the opportunity to catch up with some sleep on the coach, only to wake up in the middle of some glorious countryside approaching an old hunting lodge for the evening meal.   Each person received a massive leg of pork and of course potato salad along with beer to quench both thirst and hunger.  After the meal the Sheringham & Cromer contingent led a sing-a-long with some traditional British songs, all the other countries joined in and a great night was had by all.

Saturday was a time to find out about the town of Augsburg, all present were split into teams with a least one representative from each country, for a walking treasure hunt around the town.  It was a superb idea not only to learn about Augsburg but to have time to really get to know those attending from all the other countries.  Lunch was provided and the treasure hunt finished in the old part of town at the premises of a traditional silversmith, owned by a Round Tablers family where homemade cake and coffee was served.

Saturday evening was the big event of the weekend organised by the ex Tablers in Augsburg.   It was held in a railway museum where an old workshop was spruced up complete with a locomotive for a formal meal and speeches.  Entertainment was provided by a local skipping team and of course a representative from each country had to take part much to the amusement of all present.  All that was left was to dance the night away until 2am, no-one left early.
