Swaffham vs Sheringham [Alliance Division 3]
Sheringham arrived at Swaffham with the return to fitness of some key players, and pulled
off a fantastic victory in claiming 24 points as the promotion campaign continues.
Choosing to bowl first on what was a mild day proved to be the correct decision from
captain Jez Wright, as Dorling was removed in the 4th over by Neave. Pulman soon
followed for 5 thanks to a good catch from the skipper and Swaffham were 32 for 2 despite
a bludgeoning start from opener Walsh, who decided attack was the best form of defence.
He was also very streaky with numerous deliveries passing the bat and aerial shots
failing to go to hand. He and Boardman built the innings back up and continued to
attack the Sheringham bowling, until Wright got the vital breakthrough following a 55 run
partnership for the 3rd wicket. He had Boardman well caught by Hall for 26 and then
followed that up with Steeles in the same over. Some brilliant tight bowling from
Wright (4-16) kept Swaffham at bay and they soon found themselves on 114 for 5 thanks to
an absolutely brilliant catch from Balluza to remove Yates. Walsh was eventually out
to Wright for 58, eventually running out of luck and was bowled exposing the tail.
However, for the second time this season, the lower order boosted Swaffham's total
as they built useful partnerships with Cox (23) the mainstay with some good shots.
King claimed 3 wickets in all having Cox caught and bowled as well as Exley caught
at short leg, finishing with 3-74. Neave (2-28) cleaned up last man Smith for 9 as
Swaffham ended up all out for 181.
A tactical switch saw the opening pair change, as skipper Jez Wright promoted himself up
the order for the run chase that lay ahead for the lobsters. He and Mark Spillett
knew what the task in hand was and set about playing their shots in seeking the victory
for Sheringham. Wright especially looked back to his best, and following Spillett's
ton the previous week, Sheringham were in good stead. Both players looked powerful
on the offside, and with an improving outfield the ball sped to the boundary. Sheringham
found themselves on 60 without loss after 10 and in a commanding position. Despite a
succession of bowling changes, the home team could not get the breakthrough as Wright
especially dispatched anything loose to raise a half century. Spillett joined him on this
landmark as Wright was approaching yet another century. However, he didn't quite
make it, with the only success for Swaffham being the captain's wicket, as he was caught
by Exley for a superb 99, 1 run short of a much deserved hundred. Kieron Tuck joined
Spillett in the middle to knock off the remaining runs in an emphatic victory for the
Lobsters, which opened up a 25 point gap at the peak of Alliance Division 3. This
result definitely shows the chasing pack that Sheringham back to their best and are
getting closer to their promotion ambition.
