GIVE BEFORE YOU GO

With the summer in full flow and many people taking time out to travel overseas for holidays in the forthcoming weeks the National Blood Service is appealing to people across East Anglia to remember to give blood.

Recently the National Blood Service has seen a fall in blood collections due to the hot weather as people's attentions have moved from the donor session to being out enjoying the sunshine.  In fact, collections of blood at some sessions across the region have been 35% lower than expected.

Gareth Bell, spokesperson for the NBS said, "Blud stocks are currently lower than we would ideally like due to the hot weather causing fewer people to attend blood donor sessions.  If you have a holiday planned we would encourage you to try and give blood before or after your trip.  For those travelling overseas, who are unsure if they are eligible to donate at this time, it is recommended you check your eligibility by calling the national donor helpline prior to attending a session.  Although blood stocks are currently lower than we would like all local hospitals will continue to be supplied with the blood products they require - to ensure this continues donors are being reminded of the importance of giving blood no matter the time of year."

The demand for blood never stops and over the next few weeks over 8,500 donations of blood will be required to treat hospital patients in East Anglia.

New donors are needed throughout the region.  Anyone aged between 17 and 59 years of age, weighing over 7st 12lbs (50kgs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor.  For more information on giving blood, including details of your nearest blood donor session, call 0845 7 711 711 or log onto www.blood.co.uk
