Sheringham Sabres U17 vs North Runcton Raiders U17 [U17 Carter Cup]

Sheringham Sabres entertained North Runcton Raiders in the Quarter Finals of the Under 17 Carter Cup on Sunday and were rewarded with a semi final place after a comfortable 7 wicket victory.

After winning the toss, Sheringham elected to field following some heavy overnight rainfall and opened the bowling with W Neave and skipper D King (0-17).  The pair bowled tightly and were unfortunate not to get an early breakthrough but nonetheless kept the score to 35 in 10 overs despite the fielding restrictions.  C Moy and N Taylor then joined the attack and both again bowled tightly, building up pressure and eventually Moy got the breakthrough with the score on 37.  Moy picked up 2 more key wickets to finish with 3-28 while Taylor (0-25) was unlucky not to pick up a wicket, as Runcton were 75-3 off 20 overs. C Bishop (1-32) who soon removed Hastings and J Taylor then came on to bowl and reduced the run rate with some very accurate bowling.  Taylor's first spell of 5 overs went for just 6 runs and North Runcton had only 99 from 30 overs.  W Neave (1-20), N Taylor, and C Moy all returned to complete their allotted 7 overs with Neave picking up a wicket. 2 run outs followed as Runcton tried to up the run rate, with wickets falling quickly.  A Spillett (1-1) came on and bowled a great over, picking up the wicket of Twiddy (49) and J Taylor returned to finish with economic figures of 0-16 off 6.   This meant that North Runcton finished with a seemingly below par 155-8 in their allotted 40 overs.

In Reply Sheringham opened with Under 13's Simon Taylor (3) and James Moy (1) but both fell early to leave Sheringham 6-2 bringing C Balluza and skipper King to the crease.   With the run rate required less than 4 per over, the pair batted well under some early pressure and rode the Runcton attack to push to score along to 44 from 10.  The pair put the Sabres in control adding a superb 107 for the third wicket, thanks to numerous wide deliveries and some quick singles before Balluza fell leg before for 23.   Sheringham only required 43 to win in 16 overs as M. Hudson (10*) joined King at the crease soon after King had passed his 50.  With plenty of overs left the pair batted to see Sheringham home by 7 wickets in the 30th over.  King deservedly hit the winning runs to finish with a fine 63 not out as Sheringham booked a semi final place at the expense of the visitors.

SHERINGHAM WARRIORS ARE BORN

Following a very successful last season as East Coast Warriors U11s F.C., having come fourth in the league and winning the League Cup, beating the three teams above them in the final few matches, the team has changed its name to "SHERINGHAM WARRIORS".  The team are back in training as a completely independent outfit and are looking forward to the new season.
Last season ended with our much-publicised and very successful tour of Holland, with everyone enjoying the social and footballing events.  Due to the Dutch way of training youngsters, Warriors came up against children two and three years older than them, but gave good accounts of themselves throughout the tour and made many new friends.   Special thanks must go to the major sponsors of the event; they were the Two Lifeboats, the Lobster and the Crown public houses and Harveys Dry Cleaners and the Smugglers Cave.

Many events were held during the year including sponsored walks, fun days, cake stalls and a market stall, all of which helped us raise a fantastic £4,800.  The boys were very active participants in the fund raising and thanks must go to them and their parents for helping to raise so much money.  Thanks must also go the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society for buying and printing the team's special Holland tour t-shirts.
