BEAVERS LOG
Having spent much of the first half of the term out and about, we've had a month of
more restful activities at the Hut. Our first week revolved around preparing for
some firework pictures. Traditionally, the wonderfully colourful crayon pictures are
covered by a thick layer of black paint and left to dry ready for scraping. But we
went one better and used coloured paint to fantastic effect - even though our liberal
lashings took a number of days to dry, the following week we were ready to scrape.
Using a variety of kitchen implements the Beavers had a marvellous time making their
explosive firework creations. The evening ended with the enrolment of the new
Beavers, well attended by the proud parents, in the presence of the Group Scout Leader and
also Supreme Beaver. There was no let up over half term - we took part in the
national weather watch program. Each Beaver had to log the number of hours of sun,
rain and cloud for each day; the weather at 3pm and the visibility of the stars at
night. At the next meeting, the weather watch results were collated as part of our
weather themed night, all of which will count towards another Beaver badge. The
coming month has something of an emergency services theme with both the police service and
fire service being involved with our meetings. Hopefully neither of them will be
required for our cookery night. There's also a First Aid night with a mysterious
subtitle - how to make a mummie. All will be revealed next issue!
Anyone who would like to join Sheringham Beavers should contact Jayne Burghall on
825644 for membership information. Beavers is for boys and girls aged 6 to 8 - younger
children can join the waiting list, older ones are eligible for Cubs or Scouts. Jayne also
handles membership enquiries for all sections of Sheringham and Beeston Regis Sea Scout
Group.

HELP US NAME OUR GIANT WOODSMAN
A gentle giant now welcomes visitors to Holt Country Park and North
Norfolk District Council is asking children to help give him a name.
The sculpture of a giant woodsman was unveiled at a Hallowe'en treasure trail event
this week [Tuesday, 24 October, 2006] and it now looks out over the entrance and car park
at the Council-owned Holt Country Park, leaning on a new fingerpost sign showing where the
park's facilities and trails are. It is the work of local sculptor Mike Thody, who
has created other pieces of artwork for the park in recent years. Now the Council's
countryside rangers are running a competition to find a name for the giant.
To enter, children simply need to fill in an entry form at the visitors' centre at Holt
Country Park. Entries must be received by Christmas and the winner will receive a
prize appropriate to their age. Mr Thody started work on the 11-foot sculpture in
April and used locally-sourced timber - sweet chestnut from Council-owned woodland
at Pretty Corner near Sheringham for the giant's body, and a piece of yew for the head.
* Holt Country Park is on the B1149 just south of Holt. It has waymarked trails
around its 100 acres of woodland and family events are run throughout the year. For
more information call North Norfolk District Council's ranger service on 01263 516298.
