For some of us watching the
families saying farewell to their loved ones at the keyside, it brings back memories from
the not very distant past of when our own loved ones went away and our feelings of that
time. Mothers with young children have to be so very strong, answering their children's
questions without scaring them too much, while feeling so very scared themselves and
trying to cope with life as a single parent for the duration. They have to convey to their
families that Daddy will be home safe soon. But how do you get this across when you do not
know when or indeed if they will return? Of course, in today's world it is not just Daddy,
but Mum, Son, Daughter, Aunt, Uncle and Friend. My views of the impending trouble in the
Gulf are totally irrelevant, whether I agree or disagree is of no consequence. My thoughts
are for the Service personnel and their families left behind. If it does all begin, they
are the people who will be watching the television with all its gruesome reports, reading
the newspapers and looking at the photographs. How do you reassure your family when every
time you switch on the TV it is there? I hope that everyone will pray to their God for the
safe return of these men and women and the innocent people who are invariably caught up in
conflicts.

I missed him so
When my father went away I could only weep
For my head filled up with thoughts I feared
And I could hardly sleep
But then I got a letter, written on paper of blue
In it father said he loved me
It was this that helped me through
Letter after letter came and I was scared no more
I knew my father was alive and my heart no longer sore
In his letters there was one thing he would never say
And that was how much longer he had to be away
Each night I dreamt he would come home
But when I woke I was still alone
In my heart I know he loves me
In my eyes I cry his tears
On my wall I see his picture
In my mind I see his fears
Each day I live and breathe and learn
I know one day he will return.
Written by Kerri Clarke then aged 10
During one of the many times her father was away. |

To @Sheringham,
When I attended school in the 1940's we were taught that if during a debate you resorted
to insulting your opponent or calling them names you were demonstrating a lack of
convincing discourse and were in danger of losing the argument. By calling anybody a
dinosaur in the context used by Peter Baskerville (issue 5) is not very helpful to finding
a solution to the superstore question.
Regarding having a shopping centre in the southern area of Sheringham makes common sense -
but for the good of Sheringham as a whole do not allow it to be dominated by a large
superstore within the southern area, or anywhere else. Anyway, the real dinosaurs were
probably the most successful animals that have ever been and if it had not been for the
catastrophic natural calamity that overcame them they would most likely still be here
making a much better job of inhabiting this world - far better than we
"superior" animals are doing with our greedy must-have society!

Sell the Church Hall |
Not everyone in town is
against the idea of the Church selling off the hall in Waterbank Road. Many of the regular
churchgoers are quite happy to see it go. It is a drain on the collection plate in the
Church and this money, we feel would be better used to update the amenities in the Church
itself. Our toilets and reception area in the Church are in desperate need of modernising
and this would be to the benefit of those who regularly attend the Church, I would rather
my personal contribution were to go into the church and not the hall.
There are several other halls available to use in and around Sheringham, so the loss of
one would not make that much difference.

St Peters' Parish Hall |
| A meeting of the planning
district committee was held on Thursday 23rd January where two separate applications were
heard. Both were refused on the grounds of policy 94, Retention of community facilities
(change of use to other purposes not permitted unless no local demand demonstrated or
replacement facilities to be provided) At the time of going to press the views on this
from all interested parties were not available but will be published in the next issue. |
