Roy Dennis has very kindly let us publish some of his old Carnival photographs, we believe
that this one is in 1971. It appears to have been taken from a high up position by the
Little Theatre. It certainly brought back some happy memories for me. Two of which
certainly added to my weight problem over the years, one is of my frequent visits to The
Penguin Cafe, the other eating from The Cake Shop! |
The shop near the clock if I
remember correctly was called Cowells, or somthing like that. Their goods I seem to recall
ranged from animal feeds through to cutlery!
Do any of you have any close up photos of any of these shops or cafes? Maybe photos taken
of you and your friends inside? I don't personally as all we have was a Box Brownie camera
and I wasn't allowed to use that until I was quite old, in case I broke it. Looking at the
same place now, didn't it really change the face of the street when they removed these
places, do you think in hindsight that it was an improvement or do you think it should
have been left as it was? Notice the good old fashioned telephone box by the Clock Tower,
hard to believe that 30 years on they are still in use in some places. Much nicer to look
at than the new contraptions.
Do you recognise anyone in the above photograph, I have zoomed in on a few of the
characters. Are you one of the children in Fancy Dress or leaning out of the window above
The Penguin Cafe? If you are or you know who they are, please let us know. Roy has also
given us a lot of other old photographs which we will be publishing in future issues,
Barford Road School, The Old Recreation Ground and Pratts Shop in Station Road. |

If you have any stories or
information about any of them, send them in and we will fit in as many as we can.
Does anyone have photos of the old Co-op, how Wyndham Street used to look, the inside of
the Lushers Bakery when they used to take their Christmas Turkeys there to be cooked. If
fact any old, interesting photos or stories gratefully received. We also want to put them
on-line on our Web Site for Sheringham as part of the town's history.

The Link Issue
Remember we told you back in issue one that there was an exciting new scheme in
the planning to get transport to allow kids to get to surrounding facilities not available
in town? Well, thanks to some very hard work it is hoped that the first of these buses
will begin at Half Term.

The Royal British Legion, Sheringham & District Branch held their Christmas Dinner and
Dance on 11th January at The Southlands Hotel. We had an excellent turn out for the meal,
which was wonderful. The after dinner musical entertainment ensured that feet were tapping
and much dancing took part. Everyone had a great time and they are already booking their
seats for the next one! Our thanks go to the staff of Southlands, we were extremely well
looked after, the meal delicious and the atmosphere still festive despite the late date.
We hope that more of our members are able to attend the next social and details will be
given in the 'Legionairre'.
