Walking to Health
Think of a rhythmic, dynamic aerobic activity that uses large skeletal muscles giving many health benefits and what springs to mind? Aerobics? Dance? Jogging? No, none of these. Quite simply walking. Walking has the potential to act as an ideal low cost exercise, suitable for people of any age, gender or ability, giving numerous health benefits.  Firstly, and of great appeal to many, walking acts as a great control for weight loss. Even at a normal pace (3mph), it raises the body's metabolic rate (energy expenditure) threefold from resting level to between 13-17Kj per minute (calories). Thus in nearly all cases this will result in a loss in weight and more importantly fat.

Walking being a weight bearing exercise can also help prevent the onset of osteoporosis. This is especially beneficial to middle-aged women who may be going through the menopause. As many people know osteoporosis is a condition giving the person brittle bones. Walking can help to strengthen the bones by making them more dense thus reducing the risk of the condition.

Walking can also improve ones fitness giving the person a higher cardiovascular functional capacity and greater endurance. In tests done on men and women for about eight years there was a significant increase with those that participated in some sort of aerobic activity eg, walking.  As well as being a good form exercise for people of any age, walking is especially an excellent, relatively risk-free form of exercise for the elderly. It can help improve muscle strength in the legs, which can give greater independence and maximise mobility.

Diabetes sufferers can also gain a benefit from walking. This is due to glucose in the active muscle being stimulated, which indicates that such an exercise improves glucose tolerance by enhancing insulin sensitivity.  A reduction in the risk of coronary heart disease can also be attributed to walking and also control ones blood pressure.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, a person's mental health can be improved by a simple walk from A to B. This can especially be magnified if walking with a companion due to talking, reflecting, unwinding, clearing the brain and lifting the spirit. Links between mental health and exercise have in the past been difficult to demonstrate. But ever increasingly research is showing real evidence that mood states can be enhanced by walking and exercise.

Some of the healthy hearts in Britain belong to postmen due to the amount of walking endured. As one local postman neatly summed up "I've got two doctors, my left leg and my right!"

Prior to Sheringham match against Corton F.C. the club was presented with the LOVEWELL BLAKE JUNIOR CLUB OF THE MONTH AWARD for December 2002.

LINDA FULFORD of LOVEWELL BLAKE made the presentation, of a certificate and match ball, to the team captain KRISTIAN GLEAVE.

Unfortunately the pitch was declared unplayable by the referee and the match did not go ahead.

This was a big disappointment for supporters and visiting "ground hoppers" but the welfare of the players is the referee's responsibility.
