DRINKS CANS RECYCLED... INTO TREES FOR NORTH NORFOLK SCHOOLS

Almost 70 tonnes of aluminium drinks cans have been collected in the last 18 months through North Norfolk District Council's Twin Bins rubbish and recycling collection service and now local schools are to get the benefit.

Under a scheme run by Alupro (the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation, an association of drinks can manufacturers and reprocessors), councils can collect a tree for every tonne of cans they collect.  The trees can be for planting locally, or be given to an African project where they contribute to the economy of five villages in Burkina Faso.

NNDC has collected 67 tonnes of cans - almost 4.5 million of them - since NNDC joined the Alupro scheme in April 2005.  The Council has given seven trees to the African project and the remaining 60 trees will be given out to 17 schools across North Norfolk in the next few weeks.

Other pre-schools, primary schools and high schools will also get dogwood, pine, maple, cherry, oak, birch and rowan saplings by Christmas, though some have yet to confirm that they wish to receive the trees, which can support studies and improve a school's environment.

GRAND DONATION FOR SPECIAL THEMED HOLIDAYS AT BREAK

BREAK has been the beneficiary of £10,000 from the Freemasons' Grand Charity towards their special themed winter holidays, launched this year, for children and adults with disabilities.  Lyndsey Connell, Disabilities Manager for BREAK tells us more about the themed holidays at BREAK.

Donation to BreakShe said, "We provide supported holidays for people with disabilities every week of the year so that they can have a real holiday of their own and their parents and carers can have a deserved period of respite.

During these weeks we plan activities and outings for our guests, tailored to their needs and around what they would like to do on their holiday.   At BREAK our guests make new friends, learn social and personal skills, experience activities and outings, whilst building confidence and stimulating new skills and talents.

This personally fulfilling and very important for people with disabilities, making a huge difference to their outlook and quality of life.  We decided that we could enhance our winter holidays experiences for guests by setting up 'themed holidays' around a particular interest so that our guests can take a break with people who enjoy similar activities.   We started these special holidays in October and we are pleased to say they have been a real success!

We have had 'Water and Wheels Week' with boat trips on the Broads, train rides and seeing the shire horses at West Runton; 'Relaxation & Yoga Week' with hand and foot massages, relaxing music and yoga sessions; 'Norwich Attractions Week' seeing the sights and sounds of Norwich, and many more. At Christmas we will be having special 'Christmas Shopping and Lights Weeks', while in the New Year we have some more of the weeks mentioned along with 'Sports', '60's, 70's and 80's', 'Nature and Wildlife' and 'Activity' Weeks all planned.

"This week is 'Arts & Crafts Week' and the adults staying with us this week are having a great time!"

Molly Housego, Fundraising Officer said, "BREAK applied to the Freemasons' Grand Charity in May 2006 to request funds for our new 'Themed Holidays Project' at Rainbow in Sheringham.

At the end of September we were delighted to learn that our application had been successful. The Freemasons' Grand Charity has generously granted £10,000 to provide a variety of themed holidays for ten children and adults between now and April 2007.

"We are extremely grateful to the Freemasons' Grand Charity for their generosity in enabling people with disabilities to enjoy the stimulation, personal fulfilment and life enhancement of a special Themed Holiday at BREAK, as well as the gift of desperately-needed respite to families and carers."

Provincial Grand Master, John Rushmer said, "There are more requests for help from worthy causes than can be accommodated each year, but it was particularly pleasing, as a Norfolk Freemason, that BREAK's application has been successful. The grant from the Freemasons' Grand Charity recognises the help BREAK provides not only for the disabled people of all ages, but also the partners, parents, family and volunteers who care for them.
