BEAVERS LOG

This past month our Beaver meetings, with the exception of the cookery night, have had an emergency services theme.  We kicked off with a visit to the Fire Station - no sooner had we started, the alarm bells rang ... the lads were off on a 'shout'.  How cool was that?!  Great excitement for all our Beavers.  Upon their return, there was a tour of the station and the fire engine, rounding off the evening with a tryout of the fire hoses - what fun!  The following week was calmer but messy - cookery night, making Flapjacks and Chocolate Krakolets.  Everyone went home piled high with their goodies - and in need of a good cleanup.  Our next visitors were St John's ambulance who provided a very informative and entertaining first aid evening - the Beavers discovered that their neckscarves and jumpers make excellent makeshift slings!  We finished the month with a visit to the Police Station - a guided tour and a chance to check out the 4x4.  Apologies to the local residents for the noise while they all tried the 'blues and twos'.  Our thanks to everyone who has helped with our meetings this month, either as visitors to the Scout Hut or hosts on our nights out.  As we approach Christmas, our meetings have an obvious theme ... a traditional  Reindeer trail; a glitzy craft night and a Christmas Party, coupled with a badge ceremony.  Many of our Beavers will move up to Cubs after Christmas - we wish them good luck in their new section and look forward to welcoming new Beavers to fill the vacancies.  As we go to press, the timetable for next term is being polished to perfection - all we can say for sure is that it'll be jam-packed full of fun!

Anyone who would like to join Sheringham Beavers should contact Jayne Burghall on 825644 for membership information. Beavers is for boys and girls aged 6 to 8 - younger children can join the waiting list, older ones are eligible for Cubs or Scouts. Jayne also handles membership enquiries for all sections of Sheringham and Beeston Regis Sea Scout Group.

£100 MILLION IMPROVEMEMT PROGRAMME

The first contracts of a six year, £100 million improvement programme have been signed following successful pilot projects. The contracts are the result of a partnership between Freebridge Community Housing and North Norfolk Housing Trust (NNHT), both of which were officially formed earlier this year with the transfer of the housing stock from the Borough of King's Lynn & West Norfolk and North Norfolk District Council respectively.

Works include new kitchens and bathrooms, new windows and external doors and central heating in order to bring homes up to the Decent Homes Standard set by government.

Freebridge and NNHT have worked together to appoint contractors in order to obtain the best possible outcome and to ensure cost efficiencies for the whole programme.   Tenants from both organisations were involved in the choice of contractors.

Contractors are Gaswise Services Ltd, King's Lynn and Aqua Mechanical Services Ltd, Cambridge (heating); Foster Property Maintenance Ltd, Wisbech, Hill Partnerships Ltd, Chingford and Norfolk County Services Ltd, Aylsham (kitchens and bathrooms); Norfolk Frames Ltd, Norwich (windows and doors).

"By combining our perchasing power, we have achieved significant savings which can be used to improve our homes and the quality of our services still further," explained Tony Hall, Chief Executive of Freebridge Community Housing.  "As part of the agreement, contractors will work together in a spirit of openness and co-operation in order to share best practice and create further efficiencies as the contracts progress," said John Archibald, NNHT's Chief Executive.

The pilot projects have produced high levels of satisfaction amongst the tenants involved.   "I can't tell you what this means to me, I've never had a kitchen like this before" said one NNHT tenant while a Freebridge tenant commented  "The workmanship has been brilliant......A dream come true."

Local labour is being used for much of the work and, in addition, some contractors are taking on apprentices.
