THE ROYAL AIR FORCES ASSOCIATION SHERINGHAM & DISTRICT BRANCH

At our meeting on Tuesday, 28th November the President of the Royal Air Forces Association, Air Marshal Philip Sturley, CB MBE BSc FRAes was to have been our special Guest. Unfortunately he was asked to take the chair running a major strategy exercise for the Royal College of Defence Studies at relatively short notice.
Fortunately we were able to persuade one of our new members, Air Commodore Thomas Benson to be our Guest of Honour in his place. He joined the RAF in 1950 and spent his initial years as a pilot and later held various command posts in the U.K. and Germany. Towards the end of his service he was employed in the Ministry of Defence and NATO, involved in the development and procurement of the Tornado aircraft for the RAF, the Luftwaffe, and the Italian Air Force. On his retirement from the RAF he joined GEC and shortly afterwards his wife died of cancer. He remained with GEC/ Marconi as a military advisor for some 11 years and finally retired fully in 1993.

In the meantime Tom and Margaret had met and married, living in Bedfordshire until 6 months ago they moved to Norfolk. Between them they have 7 children and 20 grandchildren. Since his retirement Tom has been chairman of Bedford Relate, Chairman of SSAFA in Bedfordshire Vice- Chairman of a Board of Governors. He was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Bedfordshire some 10 years ago .He now lives in Cley. In his speech he related a number of fascinating stories from the moment he joined the RAF and until his retirement. The 70 members present clearly enjoyed his speech and as a result he had to answer a number of questions. He was thanked by Derek Shrigley, the Branch Chairman. Air Marshal Philip Sturley has agreed to be our Guest of Honour at the Branch AGM Luncheon at Kelling on Tuesday, 27th March.
Sir Colin Turner, President & PRO.

Beavers Log

What a funfilled time we've had leading up to Xmas, full of traditional activities both at the Hut and outdoors. We started our month with a wonderful night of craft activities with a Christmas theme - lots of cutting, sticking, drawing and colouring. Every Beaver went home clutching their special cards - and possibly wearing more of the glue and glitter than the cards had! Our ever popular reindeer trail was a great success - we carolled our way from Common Lane (just north of the Anglian Water site), round by the common, over the railway and up to finish at Lawson's Way. We had a couple of refreshment stops along the way (our thanks to the kind people who provided these) and everyone had a fantastic time seeing the Christmas Lights display at Lawson's Way. Our Disney themed fancy dress Xmas party moved venue as the Hut was being used for other purposes, so we partied down at the Community Centre. With plenty of Xmas games, a 'proper' 8mm film show projected onto a big screen (Jungle Book and Tom & Jerry) and a surprise visit by Santa, everyone had a good time and we were pleased to see some new faces there. The evening rounded off with a badge presentation ceremony and John Paine (group leader) attended to see 7 Beavers receive their Moving On awards as they now go up to Cubs. We restart on Tuesday 9th January, up at the Hut for a Welcome Back night - the rest of the months plans are shrouded in mystery ... what does Grey Beaver have in store? All will be revealed!!

A frog wants to cross to a road which is 16 feet wide. On his first jump he jumps half way across - exactly 8 feet. But he is getting tired and so with each jump he manages to jump only half the distance left between him and the edge of the road. How many jumps does it take for him to get to the other side?
