SHERINGHAM HIGH SCHOOL

This looked like a High School event. It wasn't. Thanks to money released from public funds a Community Recording Studio has been established at Sheringham High for recording music, radio broadcasts (which will go out on the air) or even spoken memories. A band of technicians go with the studio. This reminds me very much of the Folkshogskole in Norway that I spent time in where the same facilities were offered to students a little older. Eighteen acts were on offer and the stage was set for a great night. Firstly I was stunned to see the hall completely transformed by arts and other funding. Amazing elevated seating, beautiful side and stage curtains as well as a Bose P.A. (Rolls Royce of P.A.s) and an excellent lighting rig. Very impressive. We saw solo singers, singing duos, singing/dancing duos, rock groups, solo guitar and piano, solo piano played at the same time as trumpet and a drum trio. Cash prizes as well as recording slots were on offer to the winners in each category. I can't mention all those that took part but it was good to see the Shantymen as 'The Beeston Hillbillys' as an expression of this being a whole community in celebration. The winners were Amber Ratcliffe and Sarah Annison (The Golden Girls), Sarah Youngman and Charlotte Dutton (Dance) and Robert Sanders for his trumpet solo with piano (amazing). I'd love to do all justice with individual reviews but can only say I witnessed great courage, artistry, fun and passion in abundance. I can say on behalf of all there (fantastic audience) Well done and thanks a lot. My personal favourites were Emily Philips (poem), Eleanor Rix (solo vocal) and the drum trio (Harry Phil and Ben). Very different.
