The Sheringham Seagulls
|
|
For many months I've sat and thought
I cannot work out why
The Seagulls that live in Sheringham
They never seem to cry.
All towns by the sea, you'll always hear them squawk
But the seagulls that come from Sheringham
They never seem to talk.
They fly around in circles and feast upon our food,
But still they don't say thank you, to me it's rather rude.
Now we all know they've been here a lot longer than all of us
Yet still they stay so silent and never make a fuss.
So if you know the reason, please will you contact me
As to why the Sheringham Seagulls
Are as quiet as can be.

The State of Sheringham Car Park |
This was the scene of Sheringham Car Park on the morning of Thursday 8th February. The
people who use the car park at night to meet up and drive around had left the litter. The
general opinion of the townspeople is that this is 'disgusting' and 'has got to stop'. No
one is concerned with the mess left after the market on a Wednesday and Saturday because
this is cleaned up straight away by extremely hard working refuse people.
|
 |
When people, some of whom are not even from
Sheringham, leave this amount litter lying around just meters from the bin, action needs
to be taken. It attracts vermin and we will end up with even more rats in the town centre. |
Although this has been a problem for a long while with 'boy racers' using the car park at
night, never has it been left in such a mess. We are fully aware that people cannot be
banned from using the car park but the general consensus is that this has got to stop.

| Gardens for
Birds: Water |
The birds that you
attract to your garden need water for two reasons. Firstly they need it to drink and
secondly to bathe in. The species that are attracted to feeders are mainly
seed-eaters and consuming this rather dry food does mean that these birds develop a bit of
a thirst. Water should therefore be available every day and especially when it is
naturally scarce i.e. dry times in summer and of course in winter when it is frozen. It is
possible to buy quite ornate bird baths as a garden feature, but an old tray is a cheap
and effective way of providing water. It also has the advantage that it is easy to move,
and if it freezes, the ice can be tipped out.
NB do not put anti-freeze any where but in your car's radiator, bird like unpolluted
water! Another advantage of a tray is that it provides a large area of shallow water for
bathing.
Birds bathe all year round and it is particularly important for them in winter, when
keeping their plumage in tip-top condition. It is vital for keeping them warm. It is us
great to watch, so try and locate the bath where it is easy to see, and keep the
binoculars handy to get a really close look. Remember though, when birds are bathing
they are vulnerable to sneak attacks by predators, so try to put the bath close to cover;
ideally a thorny bush that they can dive into if needs be.
Of course, the best way of providing drinking water with 'en suite' facilities is to
construct a pond. Large or small, there is no doubt that for anyone interested in
attracting wildlife, a pond is the best habitat for increasing a garden's biodiversity.

SHERINGHAM SHANTYMEN |
LIFEBOAT FUND |
The Sheringham
Shantymen fund to purchase an Atlantic 75 lifeboat for the RNLI is progressing. The web
site dedicated to the fund and the special events and concerts which we are organizing has
a number of new features.
A new concert has been added to the 2003 schedule. It's at The Noverre Rooms, which form
part of the Assembly House in Norwich and features Brian McNerney who you will know from
many TV series. If you don't recognize the name, then take a look at Bryan's photograph on
www.shantymen.com.
We have also added a guest book which I hope you will visit.
You might like to take a look at the photographs from the concert featuring Isla St Clair
which we held in January. I have made some improvements in download time so, if you gave
up before, then a re-visit to www.shantymen.com might be worthwhile.
As new concerts are arranged I will keep you informed.

Many
years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim or handle of their
ceramic cups.
When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. "Wet your
whistle" is the phrase inspired by this practice. |
