QUAD ARTS
SET APPEAL (cont) |
The enormity of the project was now becoming apparent,
main line locomotives are restored for less and are half the size. The Quad Arts set is
162 feet long and can only be restored as an entity due to its unique wheel arrangement.
With the application lodged with HLF, and after several searching enquiries, last
September we were granted £341,000, 75% of the cost required. With news of the grant,
tenders were sought to carry out the work. The preferred contractor has been Carnforth
with their quote topping £455,000.
Attention now turned to raising the remaining partnership funding and with schemes
requesting the sponsorship of doors for £500 and compartments for £1000 every Society
member and Railway shareholder was contacted. The response has been terrific and at the
time of writing there were only six out of the twenty eight compartments still available
and ten out of the sixty doors. So anyone who would like to become part of this historic
project may still contact Clive Morris on 01483 422584.
While everyone's individual support has been greatly appreciated, luck smiled on the
railway yet again in the guise of Alan Moore. For those who were not aware he was the
benefactor who so generously helped save the station, firstly by offering a loan should
the money not have been raised and latterly donating £50,000 towards the cost of
replacing the roof. In this instance he offered to match pound for pound any money raised
up to £50,000, before 31st December. This I am pleased to report was the case and the
appeal has been given a tremendous boost by his extraordinary generosity. Repaying
generosity of this nature is very hard, therefore with Mr. Moore's agreement the Board of
the Railway have decided that on returning to traffic the Quad Arts will be named the Alan
Moore Set.
In late December, Richard Gibbons, Head of Collection at the National Railway Museum was
appointed by the HLF as monitor to oversee the project. He came to Holt and met with
representatives of the railway, the Society and Carnforth. After careful examination the
ground rules were laid and he returned to write his report. This was not before he was
shown around the railway, after which he commented how professional and enthusiastic he
found everyone to be. High praise indeed.
Without this initiative it is certain that within another few years the set would have
deteriorated further, costs would have risen, and almost definitely part of this country's
heritage would have been lost for good.
The North Norfolk Railway is run by volunteers and is always seeking new members to help
drive and operate the trains as well as for the many other jobs involved in making the
railway such a popular tourist attraction. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer
on the railway please contact our office (01263-820800) and ask for a 'Volunteers pack'.
You will be made very welcome!

Spring flowers are on the way and evenings are getting
lighter, so you may soon be emerging from hibernation, and even considering summer
holidays. Apart from dieting, what else can you do to prepare for departure? To get the
most from a visit to another country, it's a good idea to get to know a bit about the
language and culture beforehand. If you plan a trip to Italy, Germany or Spain, Adult
Education have just the courses to help you. All these are 10-week courses starting after
February half-term, and if you're still not sure, some begin with a free introductory
