It's been a year since the shocking arson attack on the
Ladybird Playgroup and people are starting to wonder why there isn't anything happening to
the building, after all, they must have raised a fair amount of money by now?
We asked Evelyn Meakin, Founder of the Ladybird Playgroup, and the news is good but still
very frustrating.
"What the majority of Sheringham doesn't know is that everyone involved in the group
has been working their socks off trying to raise money and make sure our situation
maintains a high profile within the community.
To complete the renovations of the fire damaged building, and build an extension the same
size, as the existing building Ladybird will need to raise £130k. This is a tall order,
but it needs to be reached if Sheringham is to offer all pre-school children a place in
education.
We've applied for several grants and there are various regulations we need to attain
including showing we have money in the bank proving we are making efforts to raise money
ourselves. Therefore it's not wise for us to start any work until certain grants have been
offered. The Insurers have offered a one off payment, but as we're not VAT registered if
we accept the offer at the moment we stand to loose £4k, and that's a lot of money, so
we're still in negotiation.
The quickest way of going ahead is to find a low interest rate loan and pay the money back
as it's raised, so if anyone knows of a low interest loan of any amount however small we'd
love to hear from you".
So will we be seeing the Bullens vans parked on Cromer Road soon?
"Hopefully! We're getting close to the target to cover the cost of building Phase I.
It's the smallest project but will provide a desperately needed Brick Store Room and a
Quiet Room. It's taken a year of heartache, frustration, anger, phone call after phone
call and meetings with every company and committee involved to try and put right such a
stupid act. It's obvious whoever did it wasn't thinking about the gravity of the situation
they would put the children through, or how much work would be involved in getting the
place up and running again. The police still need more information about the incident so
if you know anything, no matter how trivial it seems please help."
So it looks as though the Ladybird Playgroup will still be aiming to maintain a high
profile when it comes to your generosity. Nobody can deny it's a worthy cause.
