We had such a good
response from publishing the old photographs of the Sheringham Carnival, we decided to do
it again! We received several telephone calls and had many people dropping into the office
telling us how wrong we were. Here are some photographs of another year, we aren't even
going to attempt to date it as we are sure that our readers will let us know when it was
and who the stars are!

Dear Editor,
Re: Carnival Photo on Page 4 of issue no 7.
I have to differ with the date you have suggested for this picture as the Post Office was
built in 1966 (together with the TSB, now Sheringham Windows) on the site of the cafe and
cake shop. My feeling is that it is probably late 50's.
The shop by the clock, was not Cowells, this was at the top of Station Road in what was
until recently the Warehouse shop between the card shop and Fashion Wheel. The shops by
the clock in the photograph (starting at the clock) were Barneys Tobacconist, Barneys
Confectioners, Hastings Greengrocers and then the Cafe. The cafe was renamed the
"Continental" in the late 50's or early 60's and I believe carried that name
till it closed and the building was demolished. The cake shop was I believe
"Purdys" (painted beneath the window) which moved to the shop on the High St. at
the top of Co-op St. which is now a kebab shop.
Certainly the town had more of its old caracter when the buildings in the photograph were
still there. The Post Office and adjacent buildings never did blend in despite a few token
cosmetic touches! About the only good that was achieved was to create a small part of the
town centre where the pavements are not so narrow but is that not part of the attraction
of the town centre?
Turning to the pictures of the old railway station, the Whistlestop building is there, it
used to be the Library and its awning was added when it was turned into a shop after the
new library was built in New Rd. The part of it which was until recently Sanders office
was in those days I believe a newsagents.
It's good to see some old views of the town and to recall how things were, it will be good
to see more in future issues.

The above letter refers to Cowells at the top of Station Road and we have been given
this photo of the said shop.
I have it on good authority that they did not sell cutlery but definitely sold chicken
feed! |
