READERS LETTER
Dear Editor,
Perhaps those in favour of having a Tecso supermarket in Sheringham have read the report on page 2 of the North Norfolk News, on February 6th. It would appear that Tesco is attempting to scale back its plans for the replacement community centre in order to save money. In addition to being smaller in size than the originally planned, "like for like" replacement of the current building, it is their intention to use 'less durable materials', which would result in higher maintenance costs that would have to be met by the Town Council. It would appear that Tesco is trying to avoid meeting its full responsibilities as per the agreement that they had negotiated with the Town Council. Others have raised the issue of Tesco's intentions in the past, only to have their concerns met with disbelief. Their concerns seem to be well founded.

The County Hall property officials, who decide on issues such as the construction of supermarkets, appear to conduct themselves as if their paymaster is Tesco, rather than the ratepayers, two thirds of whom voted against having a Tesco supermarket in Sheringham. It may be time for the businesses that have been badly affected by supermarkets in Norfolk to take legal action against the County Council for lost business and dereliction of duty to taxpayers.

Large competitors such as supermarket chains moving into small towns like ours are known to put most small businesses out of action within a few years. The owners may have to continue paying for their lease agreements and other financial responsibilities even though their livelihood has been destroyed. The main benefits that Tesco offers are cheap produce and convenience. However, it is too much to expect the local business owners, their employees, and others working in the food preparation industry to pay for these benefits with their livelihoods.
Yours sincerely, Jasmin French & Geoffrey French

CAN YOU HELP?

The Sheringham & District Branch of the Royal British Legion is a very strong branch and recently won two County Awards, one for Service work and one for progress & efficiency. We are entering a float into this year's Carnival and we want to know if anyone would be willing to lend us either a flatbed truk or tractor & trailer for both Sheringham & Cromer Carnival days.

Sheringham Community Paper

Many of our members would dearly like to be involved in the Carnival, but are unable to join in as they find the route too long for them, a vehicle would allow them to ride and be part of the fun.

If you think you may be able to help, please contact either:
David Farrow 01263 821969 (after 5pm) or leave a message at the paper with Melanie on 01263 826005.
