| READERS LETTER |
To @ Sheringham
Three ideas for improving the town's facilities:
1. Sheringham Little Theatre. Getting rid of the boring Bridge Company
programme in the summer for something livelier is the best news for Sheringham other than
a Tesco near the crossroads, but who really wants old-fashioned farces or celebrity shows
instead? Why don't the District Council get rid of the Little Theatre altogether and use
the site for what local young people want, somewhere they can go clubbing until late
without having to go all the way down to the front?
2. North Norfolk Public Facilities. Every tolerant person welcomes the
news that our gay fellow-citizens will soon be allowed to meet together in public
conveniences, but the government adds the stupid proviso that cubicles must be completely
shut, when they know full well there are spaces underneath the doors. The disabled
community have their own lavatory compartments, so why discriminate against the gay
community and other sexual minorities? Surely they should have purpose-built rooms in
every public toilet, including those beside Sheringham Old Station and (while it stays
open) in the Little Theatre?
3. Church Hall. The simplest and cheapest answer to this argument is to
leave the hall intact and pull down the Church itself. All the present activities at St
Peters, with its "non-theist" notions and its dying congregation, could be
transferred to a new Multi-faith Community Hall in Waterbank Road. The larger site could
then be cleared for use either as a two-storey town centre car-park or as a housing
complex for the forthcoming Iraqi asylum-seekers and African AIDS victims, thereby adding
the multi-cultural vibrancy that will make our town a Beacon of Progress throughout the
EU.

FLOWER POWER FOR LOCAL YOUNGSTERS |
Local Children are being invited to celebrate this year's Mother's Day
with a "blooming lovely" present for their mums - in a competition being held by
Norwich and Peterborough Building Society!
Staff at the Society's branch at 29 High St, Sheringham, are inviting local youngsters up
to the age of 12 to put their creative talents to the test! All they need to do is go
along to the branch and collect a paper plate. Their challenge is to make this plate into
their mum's face! They might want to add wool for the hair, paint long eyelashes on, or
make some glasses from pipe cleaners! The best 'face' taken into the branch by Thursday
13th March will win its creator a fantastic art set for themselves and a beautiful bouquet
of flowers to give to their mum for Mother's Day (Sunday 30th March).
Mother's Day originated from an ancient Greek festival. Every Spring, the Greeks held a
celebration to honour Rhea, the Mother of the Gods and Goddesses. It is thought that the
early church in England adopted this ceremony to celebrate Mary, the Mother of Christ.
This developed in the 1600s when servants returned home on Mothering Sunday, taking small
gifts and trinkets to their mothers.
Caroline Knowles, Manager of N&P's Sheringham branch said, "Mother's Day is the
perfect time to celebrate the special bond between children and their mums. We want to
give local youngsters the chance to win a super bouquet of flowers to show their mum just
how much they care. I can't wait to see all the entries, I'm sure it will be hard to pick
just one winner!" |
