Sheringham Football Club 1926 - 1927
I note with interest your recent articel in magazine enquiring about the missing names
from the 1926-27 Sheringham Football team and would advise as follows:
Seated front is Jack Battrick, my father's brother Jack (Uncle Jack to me).
Thank you very much for putting this article in as I never knew that Jack had played for
Sheringham. In 1923 Jack was in Egypt with the Royal Flying Corps and was RFC Boxing
champion of Egypt and it must have been when he returned home that he played for
Sheringham.
My younger brother Tony (played for Cromer Res) plus myself were both keen footballers and
had I not left Sheringham at the age of 16 for a shipping career in a little unknown place
called Felixstowe then I probably would have played for Sheringham.
My youngest son Stefan Battrick-Newell presently plays for Sheringham U13's and was also
greatly interested in your article - and to find out that his grandfather' s brother had
also played for Sheringham in those very early days of football.
I trust the above information about JACK is helpful and should you require any further
information then please do not hesitate to contact me.
In the meantime just in case you are interested in the sport of Boxing, Sheringham only
ever had one real boxing team consisting of my father Les (Len) Battrick and his brother
Bob Battrick plus 'Secky' Farrow (uncle to Brian Farrow) and Jack Dennis (brother to the
late Tony Dennis). They gave exhibition matches to the fishermen on the Robin Hood Car
Park plus regularly boxed at Cromer Town Hall, Weybourne Army Camp and other local venues.
Yours Sincerely, Les Battrick |

FOOTBALL CLUB |
The bad weather upset the fixture list again in February preventing the 1st XI playing
their important KO Cup match against Wortwell, but they managed to get in the home game
against Downham Res who were soundly beaten 9-0. The reserves looked to be back on form
after beating Mundesley 6-2 but the following week lost 2-3 to lowly Happisburgh. With
only 8 weeks to the end of the season, the 1st XI's fixtures are beginning to back up.
With at least twelve more matches to play there is plenty more football to be played.
Sheringham's first match in the Cromer Lifeboat Cup is against Blakeney at Cabbell Park on
Tuesday 15th April, Kick Off 6:15pm. The Club is to hold Car Boots at the Recreation
Ground every Friday from 2nd May. A trial run is scheduled for Good Friday.

(EDP) Friday 15th October 1897 - IMPORTANT MEETING
A special meeting will be held at the Cross Keys Hotel, North Walsham, today at 5:30pm to
consider a protest lodged by Melton Park against the eligibility of the Halt men who have
played for Sheringham.
The distance between the grounds have been taken by the League secretary and
representatives of each of the Clubs. Taking the direct road from Holt to the grounds, the
Melton ground is 600 yards nearer the player's residence, who lives nearest to Sheringham.
The Sheringham Club contends (from a letter just received by the Secretary) that the
distances should be measured from the dressing room of the club. Should such be the case,
the Sheringham Club claims their ground is nearest.

| Requiem for a
Garden Bench |
The bench stood in the garden for over seven years through all weathers. Four times it had
been moved, always on Friday nights, once arriving on top of the shed at the Lifeboat Car
Park. Kind people returned the bench to its garden as the owners are elderly and disabled.
The final move came on Friday 31st January when someone had a great idea and threw the
bench over the wall into the road, where it lay shattered beyond repair, until a very kind
couple carried it back into the garden, hopelessly broken.
We would like to thank the very kind couple who went to the trouble of bringing back the
wrecked bench pieces.
With regard to those who had such fun moving and destroying the bench, this cannot happen
again as it will not be replaced. SORRY!
